Skid-Mounted Packages for Gulf Sites: What to Specify Before Fabrication

A skid package is bought once and lives on site for twenty years, so the specification work happens in the first two weeks. These are the points that decide whether a package arrives usable, or arrives with a list of site modifications.
1. Hazardous area classification, in writing
For oil & gas sites this is the first question: Zone 2 versus Zone 1, gas group, temperature class. On our portable diesel generator sets the explosion-proof execution is built for Zone 2 service; anything requiring Zone 1 changes the enclosure, the cable glands and often the whole engine selection. Get the area classification drawing from the client — not a verbal "it's outside the classified area".
2. Ambient conditions that break assumptions
| Parameter | Why it changes the package |
|---|---|
| Design ambient (Gulf summer, 50°C+) | Derating of engines, motors and electrical components; cooling package sizing |
| Humidity and salt-laden air | Anti-corrosion coating system, IP rating, stainless fasteners, tropicalised electrics |
| Sand and dust | Filtration stages, enclosure pressurisation, filter service access |
| Solar radiation | Sunshades and ventilation, or the enclosure becomes an oven |
State design ambient and humidity in the datasheet. A package quoted to 40°C and installed at 52°C is a claim waiting to happen.
3. The utility envelope
Air, power, water, drain and vent: each one needs pressure, flow, quality and connection size. For a chemical injection package, add the chemical itself, dosage range, turndown and the material compatibility of pump heads, seals, tubing and the injection point. Injection packages fail on the chemistry, not the frame.
4. Control and interface
- Local control panel or remote I/O to the plant DCS — and which signals go where.
- Instrument air quality and quantity available on site.
- Whether the skid is supplied with its own PLC and whether the client's standard is mandatory.
5. Documentation and testing
For packages, the paperwork is part of the product: P&ID and GA drawings for approval before fabrication, equipment datasheets, material certificates, FAT procedure and report, and O&M manuals in the language the operators actually read. Agree the approval cycle: two weeks of drawing review at the start is cheaper than a rework at FAT.
6. Shipping and site handling
Lifting points and centre of gravity, skid dimensions against the container or flat-rack, transport bracing, and whether the package ships fully assembled or in modules. For Gulf destinations, add the coating repair kit and a spare-parts list, because the next technician is a flight away.
What we need to quote
Area classification, design ambient, utility data, the process duty (flow, pressure, chemistry), control philosophy and destination port. Send those to websale@sawye.com and the offer comes back with the package scope separated from the options — so the comparison with other bids is on the same basis.
